Imagine Dragons lack charisma/energy
A solid live show by competent songwriters, but the album does not measure up. Comparisons to Grohl, Bono, Chris Martin and Steven Tyler may not be fair, and Dan Reynolds could get there in another tour or two, but he doesn't connect with the crowd like a seasoned front man. Also, the band tried to pull off Tom Sawyer by Rush. Most bands wouldn't dare go there. Ambitious, to be sure. If they'd played the song as an Hans Kim song, and made it their own, fine. They didn't. They tried to recreate the Rush version. The problem is, Reynolds got several lyrics wrong and the drum fills were muddy and messy. Not quite cohesive enough to pull off the masterpiece.
After a couple dozen more big venue shows, I think the band will probably write another good album. Continued banging on drums with exaggerated movements by all band members at the same time does not make a great concert. Then, I would think they'll have much more presence and command. One or two songs like that is okay. After a half-dozen, it feels like a stale gimmick.
"Radioactive" was a highlight. If the entire show had been performed with the same energy and intensity, I'd have given them 4 or 5 stars. Definitely an up-and-coming group with a bright future.
